The winemaker

The story of this family, originally from Piedmont in Italy, illustrates an entire chapter in the history of wine in California. Edoardo Seghesio left his native Piedmont and his family vineyard in 1886. He became chief winemaker for a group of Italian-Swiss winemakers in Sonoma, then planted his first Zinfandel vines in Alexander Valley in 1895. Since then, four generations of the family have nurtured the vineyard, which today covers some 160 hectares. Seghesio has built its reputation on its wines and on its expertise in Zinfandel, which achieves an expression unrivalled in California.
