Vibrant ruby red, intense fruit with a cool minerality, very pleasant tannic structure Barely an hour north of Barcelona, we arrive in a unique and almost untouched natural setting. Within sight of the jagged rock formations of the famous Montserrat lies a pristine, dreamlike landscape dotted with pine and oak forests. Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the small, traditional 500-hectare do pla de bages wine region is a secret for insiders and connoisseurs alike. In recent years, by far the most important producer and quality powerhouse in do pla de bages has been bodegas abadal, run by the roqueta family, whose local winegrowing history dates back to the 12th century. In particular, valenti roqueta, still lord of the do board of control, is responsible for the bodega's leading role and the region's excellent reputation. Thanks to his oenology studies in Montpellier, his international experience and his great ambition, quality has improved considerably since the 90s. Today, his son ramon roqueta and oenologist joan soler continue the legacy with great passion. The mid-mountain Mediterranean climate, with wide temperature variations and low rainfall, gives abadal fruity, concentrated wines with a fresh herbaceousness and astonishing ageing potential. Typical notes are those of pine cones, lavender, thyme and rosemary - aromatic herbs and trees that grow between old vines on terraced vineyards. The similarities between grape varieties and wine style with nearby France are not coincidental. For over 100 years, French grape varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah have adapted perfectly to the harsh microclimate and today produce fruity, modern wines that uniquely reflect the character of the variety and the region.
