The winemaker

In the 1990s, Spain was known mainly for its rich red wines. Armed with their experience of white wines, Jacques and François quickly detected the untapped potential of the Rueda terroir for the production of dry, aromatic white wines. They began by producing Sauvignon Blanc, but soon discovered the Verdejo grape variety, then unknown outside Iberia. Grown in Rueda for centuries, the Verdejo grape is unique to this region. François Lurton and his brother Jacques were among the first to produce a dry Verdejo. They set out to reveal the variety and subtlety of its aromas, roundness, length and complexity. They then discovered the compatibility of Verdejo and oak, so they created a wine aged in oak barrels, called Cuesta de Oro. The white wines they produced revolutionized the appellation, making Rueda the Mecca of Spanish white wines. Today, Cuesta de Oro is one of Spain's finest white wines. It has thus contributed to the renaissance of this ancient grape variety and its current worldwide renown.
