The winemaker
The vines are planted mainly on the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein mountains, where the granite soils produce robust, expressive wines.
Syrah is planted on the warmer, north-facing slopes with better drainage at different altitudes. Some vineyards are planted with Syrah more densely (6,250 to 8,333 vines per ha) on slopes too steep for mechanical production (tractors, etc.) in the typical échalas style of France's Rhône region.
Merlot is planted on the facing is the cooler, high-altitude areas and the vines are vertically trellised. Sauvignon Blanc is also planted on these east-facing, higher altitude slopes to ensure the vines are subjected to the cooler temperatures required by this grape variety. We have recently planted Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, a selection of which are Guyot pruned.
These blocks are mainly planted with the movement of the warm afternoon sun taken into consideration in an attempt to prevent the exposure of the bunches to the sun. New Pinot Grigio blocks are planted on eastern or southern slopes, which are cooler and angled against the hot afternoon sun.
In 2011, the property formerly owned by Graham Beck, located to the east of L'Ormarins, was purchased and is now part of the L'Ormarins vineyard. Most of the vineyards were uprooted and only blocks of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were left as these grapes will be used for our Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wine.
Ormarins is located in an area of high rainfall with an average of 1300mm per year with peaks in June to August. In October the south wind is a factor management and canopy concerning, as the positioning of shoots, is always important during this time of year.
Ormarins has an average annual temperature of 25.8°C.
