The winemaker
History
Founded in 1939 by Michael Hans "Spatz" Sperling, Delheim Wines is a family-run winery that has carved out an enviable reputation in the South African wine industry. Sperling was a German immigrant who moved to South Africa at the age of 21. With his wife Vera, he bought a property in Stellenbosch in 1937, which was then mainly used for sheep farming and growing fruit and vegetables. After discovering the terroir's potential for wine production, Sperling planted the property's first vineyards in 1940 and began producing wine under the Delheim brand. The vineyard is now run by the third generation of the Sperling family, and continues to produce wines of exceptional quality. Patriarch and legend of the South African wine industry, Michael Hans "Spatz" Sperling, and his wife Vera are retired, but still on the farm. Eldest son Victor Sperling and eldest daughter Nora Sperling-Thiel serve as directors of the company and live on the farm with their families. The other two children, Maria and Nicholas, live in Europe.Pinotage and Chenin wines
Delheim wines are renowned for their quality, complexity and balance. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wines are produced using traditional winemaking methods, combined with modern technologies to ensure consistent quality. Delheim produces a wide range of wines, from fresh, fruity whites to rich, powerful reds. The majority of the wines are made from grapes grown on the estate, and are all produced with respect for the environment. Whites: Sauvignon Blanc is a dry, fruity white wine that is one of Delheim's flagship products. The grapes are grown on steep slopes that benefit from the cooling effect of the Atlantic Ocean, giving the wine lively acidity and tropical fruit aromas. Chenin Blanc is another Delheim white wine of exceptional quality. This grape variety originated in the Loire region of France, but is now widely grown in South Africa. Delheim Chenin Blanc is a dry, fruity wine, with aromas of pear and apple. Reds: Pinotage is South Africa's emblematic grape variety, and Delheim produces an exceptional Pinotage. The grapes are grown on sunny slopes and aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months to give it a rich, complex taste of black cherry and plum. Cabernet Sauvignon is another classic Delheim red. The grapes are grown on rich soils
