Located in the south-east, Puglia, Italy's second-largest wine-growing region, enjoys optimal, warm conditions. The character of Puglia's humid sea breezes and Mediterranean climate is also reflected in the wine. On flat or undulating terrain, the soils are composed of clay and limestone. Primitivo grapes originally come from the border region between Croatia and Hungary. Since researchers discovered that the variety is genetically identical to zinfandel, primitivo wines have enjoyed a boom. In the Italian wine-growing region of Puglia, traces of the past can be traced back some 150 years. The only dop region for primitivo wines, manduria has experienced a boom over the last 20 years.
