The winemaker

Elephant Hill was born of love at first sight. In 2001, German couple Reydan and Roger Weiss visited the region and fell in love with Hawkes Bay and, more specifically, the magnificent Te Awanga coastline. But the ambition was to create a futuristic, modern vineyard, integrated into the landscape, synthesizing the Weiss couple's passions for wine, modern art and architecture. The result is a true work of art, functional and harmoniously integrated into the landscape. The Elephant Hill estate was created in 2003, and the wines are made in line with the estate's philosophy: traditional methods and technological innovations work side by side to bring out the best in the terroir given to them. The Elephant Hill estate takes great care to preserve its terroir, treating its soils and vines very sparingly in order to obtain the purest expression of its grape varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Shiraz) and soils. This seaside vineyard is certified by the New Zealand equivalent of the AB label (organic wine). Today, Andreas Weiss, the couple's son, manages the estate with his wife Karina and their 5 children.
