The winemaker

Australian Larry McKenna, aka "McPinot", one of New Zealand's finest pinot noir winemakers, cut his teeth in Europe and at Martinborough Vineyards before settling at Te Muna, 5 kilometers southeast of Martinborough, in 1994. With the support of other Australian shareholders, this connoisseur of pinot noir and Martinborough terroirs has patiently built up a 24-hectare vineyard, planted at high density on the region's best terroirs, which are highly draining and warming: the alluvial gravel terraces along the Huangarua River. From his experiences in Burgundy (Dujac, l'Arlot, de Villaine) and the USA (Oregon), he had retained the principles of parcel-based vinification, long (partial) whole-cluster fermentations, the use of indigenous yeasts and the correct use of wood in the ageing of his wines. These choices have been refined and refined over the years, resulting in a range of top-flight Pinot Noirs that combine great refinement of texture and structure with Martinborough's typical purity of fruit. After 23 years of service, Larry McKenna retired in 2022 and handed over to Rowan Hoskins (vines) and Tim Bourne (cellars). Since 2018, the estate has been owned by another big name, Australian Torbreck.
