The winemaker
Acquired in 1961 by the man who would become Sir George Fistonich, Villa Maria's 5 acres of land are located in Mangere (Auckland). The small, one-hectare vineyard where George worked alone in the 60s has grown to 250 people working on the production and export of this wine, which is prized in over 50 countries. The Queen even knighted him for his commitment to the development of New Zealand's wine culture. Indeed, it was he who contributed to the renown of the country's wines, now known as the masters of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir (the wines of the Loire and Burgundy be damned). The estate has won the most awards for its New Zealand wines, which are considered to be New Zealand's finest.
