Gigondas, a small village that gave its name to one of the five southern Rhône Valley crus in 1971, is located halfway between Orange and Mont Ventoux. The appellation stretches across the south-western slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail and its nearby valleys. Its sandy, marly soils (blue marl) are covered with white pebbles, favoring the sun's rays and thus producing grapes rich in tannins and polyphenols. As the vines are located at altitudes of up to 400m, this sunshine is essential to the sometimes late ripening of the grapes.
