Red fruits, lingonberries, rather discreet nose, not too overpowering, fairly firm palate, not a blockbuster, nice maturity the severe earthquake that considerably affected the campania region some thirty years ago was the starting point and the end point of a remarkable success story for the small i capitani estate. Antonio cefalo, a civil engineer by training and, as such, involved for years in the region's reconstruction work, built a small wine museum with the remains of his destroyed cellar and, at the same time, a new, more modern winery. Taking on the task is a family affair, as Antonio's great-grandfather was already a respected figure in the small village of torre le nocelle, which is why he was given the nickname 'i capitani'. The winery is located in the center of the irpinia sub-region, the highest quality production area in campania, amidst picturesque hills, within sight of the world-famous village of taurasi. Only 12 hectares are planted with Campania's native grape varieties: fiano di avellino, greco di tufo, falanghina and aglianico. The history of Italian wine has its earliest roots in Campania, and stylistically, i capitani's wines follow a sure path. Low yields, slow fermentation and long ageing on lees for the white wines result in mineral, long-keeping wines that need a little time and are not designed for quick consumption.
