Francesco Cusumano founded the company forty years ago. He is a winemaker at heart. He believes in Sicilian wine and is firmly convinced that it is possible to produce quality wines in Sicily. He has worked with determination to achieve this goal. Cusumano's leitmotiv is the idea of the cru. For each grape variety, the optimum location is determined. Cusumano's starting point was the diversity of Sicily's terroirs. He searched Sicily for regions offering the best conditions for different grape varieties. He bought vineyards there. The estate has its own vineyards in exceptional locations near partinico, monreale, piana degli albanesi, alcamo, salemi, butera and pachino. In the 90s, sons Alberto and Diego joined the business. Development accelerated. Cusumano equipped its winery to meet all modern technical requirements: temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, French oak barrels, air-conditioned storage cellars. Cusumano wines are among the best that Sicily has to offer. They are full of personality and bear their own signature. They have an incredible richness of attractive, bewitching fruit aromas and southern mellowness. Their latest acquisition is the vineyards around Mount Etna. In the volcanic region of Etna, they have acquired various plots of land between 650 and 1,000 meters above sea level, for a total of 15 hectares of vines, leased winemaking capacity and started building their own winery. The alta mora etna wine line comprises two wines. The bianco and rosso are made from native Sicilian grape varieties, carricante (white) and nerello mascalese (red). The name alta mora comes from alta = high, in reference to the vineyards located at altitude, and mora = dark, in reference to the dark volcanic soil.Seven hectares of vines are located in the Grand Cru Guardiola, a steep, terraced, tightly planted vineyard with a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The terroir is absolutely unique. The soil is of volcanic origin, consisting of lava, basalt, ash and sand. Although the grapes grow on the slopes of an active volcano, the wines are not bursting with southern power and opulence, but display the characteristics of cool climate wines such as freshness, minerality, cool elegance, finesse and clear, clean fruit.
