Located in the south-east, Puglia, Italy's second-largest wine-growing region, enjoys optimal, warm conditions. The character of Puglia's humid sea breezes and Mediterranean climate is also reflected in the wine. Derived from sanguis jovis, 'blood of jupiter', this ancient Italian grape received its name. It is considered one of Italy's most important grape varieties and is grown throughout the country, but preferably in Tuscany. One of the slow-maturing varieties, the grapes are not harvested until October, even in warm weather. The resulting wines are generally high in acidity and tannin, and light red in color.
