The winemaker
Franciacorta is produced in this region. It's the Italian counterpart to Champagne (if I do say so myself), a sparkling wine made from different grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot blanc. It's little known outside Italy, and for good reason: 80% of production is sold in Italy. To produce a Franciacorta, strict rules must be followed, such as harvesting by hand. A colossal workload, but one that guarantees the quality of the final product. Several houses produce Franciacorta, and it's Bellavista, run by the Moretti family, that I'm taking you on a tour of, an estate that I visited for a morning. Today, Bellavista is the largest winery in the region, producing one and a half million bottles a year. Initially, Vittorio Moretti, a passionate lover of the land, had just a few hectares and produced around 3,000 bottles for his personal cellar and friends. In the 70s, he bought more land and expanded. Today, the Bellavista vineyards cover 190 hectares.
