In a few words ...

Gewurztraminer is the grape variety least represented in Clos-Saint-Urbain, and comes from two small plots just above the Thur river that runs along the lower part of the Clos. Despite the appearance of warmth due to the sunny exposure of this cru and the dark rocky nature of the soil, Rangen is a very late-ripening terroir, due to its altitude and the cold valley winds. Gewurztraminer therefore needs all the help it can get from the soil, exposure and river (light reflection, heat transfer) to ripen properly, and, of course, to be harvested late. The soils of choice for this grape variety are probably marl-limestone soils, which give the wine a long-keeping structure while minimizing varietal perfume expression. However, on Rangen, this grape variety is also strongly tamed by the volcanic terroir, capable of giving the wine power, ageing structure and a recognizable cru mark. In 2012, Gewurztraminer was the most sheltered, and therefore suffered less from the vagaries of the weather. On the other hand, there was a slight presence of noble rot.

Tasting notes

Aroma

The nose is straightforward: wet stones, intense gunflint and then some barely distinguishable citrus aromas. Powerful and distinguished, the nose is in keeping with the volcanic terroir.

Wine Fruity | Smoked

Taste

Powerful, rich structure, with aromas of stone, ash and spices. The harmony of the 2013 is built around a beautiful acidity, a light mellowness and a long finish.

Wine Elégant | Tannique
