An exceptional cuvée, "garance" comes from the 2 oldest Syrah plots in the Costières-de-Nîmes appellation, planted in 1955. It's a powerful, concentrated wine that needs a few years to develop its full aromatic range. A wine for laying down, the 2011 vintage of the domaine's flagship cuvée is already showing its full potential. Deep garnet-red in color, the nose is clearly dominated by black fruits, and the mouth benefits from tannins that are still highly concentrated. The toasty notes on the finish reflect the ageing process, but are accompanied by the freshness characteristic of Valcombe wines. 100% Syrah. Vines planted in 1955. 2 south-facing plots on hillsides. Soils of 4 to 20 m of Rhone pebbles, with a very fine layer of limestone in the subsoil. A few thousand bottles per year. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels (300l), then a minimum of 2 years in bottle. Aged for 20 years.

The appellation Costières-de-Nîmes is part of the region of Vallée du Rhône from France which include Château de Valcombe and its 12 cuvées. Spread over The Rhone Valley and its rich, complex terroirs. The region is divided into two distinct subregions: Northern Rhone (known as Rhône Septentrional) and Southern Rhone (Rhône Méridional). In the former we find strong wines in beautiful colours with warm, spicy notes, produced by vineyards that stretch 4,700 ha along the Rhone. The latter, with an area of 71,000 ha, is much more important, and this is evident of course in its annual production of red, rosé and white wines quite unlike those of the Northern Rhone., this region is 3 million hectolitres per year of red wines, rosés, dry and sparkling white wines, and natural sweet wine..
