The winemaker

Located in Sainte Colombe-en-Bruilhois, on the outskirts of Agen, the Sauvagnères estate clings to the slopes at the southeastern tip of the Buzet appellation zone. At the end of the slope, the vines benefit from a variety of exposures ranging from south-east to north-west. The soil is clay-limestone, with gravel on the hilltops. In all, 20 hectares of vines in an arc around the winery produce the grapes that are the raw material for Château Sauvagnères. The history of the Sauvagnères estate can be summarized as follows. As early as 1617, the departmental archives provide information on the wines produced at Sainte Colombe-en-Bruilhois. We read that they were sold under the name of "vin de Ste Colombe" and that they had to be protected by the local Seigneur from usurpation of the name by neighboring communes wishing to promote their wines. We can therefore say that, even at that time, the wines of Ste Colombe were appreciated. The first land register dates back to 1663. It mentions the "Saubaignères" property belonging to Jean Capdegelle, with the same boundaries as today's. Vines were planted there. The second cadastre dates from 1725. It mentions the "Sauvaignères" property belonging to Francois Dumas, still on the same boundaries and with the same destination. The third cadastre dates back to 1771. It shows the Sauvaignères property belonging to Sieur Dumas de Sauvaignères Bourgeois, planted with vines and fruit trees. From this date onwards, the archives are not yet available for consultation, as they have not been sorted or indexed. The Sauvagnères property was bought in 1969 by Jacques Therasse, who was determined to create a vineyard there. With the help of his son, Bernard, the first plantings were carried out from 1971 to 1974, bringing the total to 13ha. Planting continued in the 1980s, reaching a total of 20ha.
