Famille Laplace
(14 customer reviews)
Established for 4 generations at Château d'Aydie in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, the Laplace family's philosophy is one of conviviality. They create a dozen sun-drenched cuvées under the appellations AOP Madiran, AOP Pacherenc du Vic Bilh and vins de France. The Laplace family represents the Madiran terroir in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region. Château Aydie is one of the appellation's largest estates, and the Laplace family has been at the helm for almost a century. The diversity of the soils enables the winegrowers to produce twelve cuvées with the accents of their terroir. Find out more

The winemaker
The Laplace Family Vineyard
The family owns 58 hectares of extremely varied terroirs. Moncaup pebbles bring roundness. The gravelly soils of Aydie and Madiran help ripen the grapes. The clay-limestone soil of Saint-Lanne produces complex, opulent wines. The boulbène soil of the lower slopes produces fruity, supple wines. The grape varieties are numerous: tannat (84%), petit and gros manseng, arufiac, petit courbu, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, fer servadou, colombard, sauvignon blanc, syrah. The Laplace family has been producing wines in the Madiran appellation for four generations.
In 1927, Frédéric Laplace started the family business at Château Aydie. Pierre Laplace took over in 1952, followed by Jean-Luc Laplace in the 70s. Shortly afterwards, the family became owners of the château. Today, the new generation has joined the business. The know-how and traditions handed down from generation to generation are expressed in the family's desire to produce classic wines from their terroir.
The Laplace family composes with the variety of soils at Château Aydie
The estate covers 80 hectares, including 58 hectares of vines. This makes it one of the largest estates in the appellation. The sheer size of the land means that the terroirs are extremely diverse. The clay-limestone soil led to the development of the local grape variety in the 1970s. Combined with this rich terroir, tannat produces complex wines. To complete the alchemy, pebbly soils add roundness to the wines. Gravel and boulbène soils are also exploited. Each plot is carefully studied to bring out the best in the grapes. The region's oceanic climate is ideal for growing vines.
The Laplace Family wines
From the tannat grape, the Famille Laplace produces superb Madirans, deep and rich in tannins. Their Pacherenc cuvées, both dry and sweet, are highly aromatic. A vin de liqueur and several vins de France (white, red and rosé) complete the range. The Laplace family offers twelve cuvées for sale in two appellations: AOC Madiran and AOC Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. A number of vins de France are also promoted to exploit the stress-free cultivation of the low-lying boulbènes slopes. Madiran is centered on tannat, the quintessential Gascon grape variety. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fer Servadou are also used.
Pacherenc, whose production is limited to 9 hectares, is based on local grape varieties: petit manseng, gros manseng, arrufias and petit courbu. Some exceptional wines stand out, such as Château d'Aydie and Odé d'Aydie. The Laplace family also produces a liqueur wine from their heritage: Maydie. This delicacy was created by Frédéric Laplace by fortifying tannat grape juice with brandy.
