The winemaker

History of the Gayrard estate since the 1950s

More than 5 centuries ago, Maurice Gayrard gave life and his name to the Gayrard estate by starting to produce and sell his wines. The domain is then considered as one of the first producers of bottled wine of the Gaillacois vineyard. The estate developed little by little to reach 13 hectares of vineyards. However, the 90s put a stop to this prosperity. Indeed, this period was marked by a wine crisis that affected the region considerably.
In 1992, and for almost 30 years, the vineyard was torn up and transformed into a 60 hectare cereal field. Three generations later, the estate was revived by Pierre Fabre and his partner Laure Gros. They started by replanting 4 hectares of vines and bought 4 other hectares not far away, in the heart of the Gaillac vineyard. Their main objective is to raise the colors of the domain, which today covers about 30 hectares.

Richness of the Gayrard estate and terroir

Located on the edge of the Gaillac vineyards, on the Cordais plateau, in Milhavet, Tarne, the Gayrard estate is a property of more than 100 hectares. Thanks to its location, the vineyard is situated on clay-limestone soils which bring richness and complexity to the red wines. In addition, the 8 hectares of vineyards surrounding the property have shallow and mainly stony soils providing minerality and freshness to the white and rosé wines.
The different grape varieties on the estate are: Syrah, Duras, Fer Servadou for the reds; Loin de l'oeil, Sauvignon for the white, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah for the rosé.

An estate committed to organic farming and biodynamics

Since 2016, a conversion to Organic Agriculture of the estate has been initiated. Consistent with values and convictions that found them, Pierre Fabre and his partner Laure Gros are keen to recreate a natural space by developing biodiversity and to restore a natural balance by improving their production techniques. This implies a total rethinking of practices : natural fertilizers, essential oils, herbal teas to protect against diseases and parasites, silica to reinforce the vigor of the vines, etc. In addition, the estate is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thus, Pierre Fabre and his partner gradually develop wine tourism by offering tourists a tour of the estate.
