A family-owned vineyard in Haut-Armagnac

The Arton estate is above all a gamble, a radical change of life, and the pursuit of a promise: the production of exceptional wines and Armagnacs.

In 1979, Patrick de Montal and Victoire de Montesquiou fell under the spell of the Arton estate and decided to settle there. After a life marked by the Parisian rhythm, the couple decided to return to their native land, in Gascony. Where the cicadas sing and the sun shines, where the calmness of nature and the diversity of the flora stand out, it is here that the couple chooses to spend the rest of their lives.

The project is simple: to give back its letters of nobility to the domain of Arton by cultivating again the fallow vines of the domain. First of all, it is the production of Haut-Armagnac which is launched and which makes known the domain. The production of Armagnac is meticulously followed, from the grapes to the bottling, in order to obtain a most prestigious product.

This traceability, set up in 1981, makes Patrick de Montal a visionary in the field of wine! As well as his bet on bringing Armagnac up to date, which seems to be taking shape little by little.

Since this year, the couple's son, Jean de Montal, and his wife Lili de Montal, have followed the same pattern as their parents and left city life to join the estate. Since their arrival, a real work of dynamization and modernization of the vineyard has been undertaken, both in viticulture and winemaking and marketing, communication.

An innovative Armagnac terroir close to nature

The terroir of the Domaine d'Arton consists mainly of clay-limestone soils, rich, fertile and naturally filtering. A true land of Haut-Armagnac, the vineyard is planted with eight grape varieties: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros Manseng, Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet.

Each grape variety is planted on the plot that suits it best, depending on the slope, the sunshine, the proximity with the local wildlife...

The estate is also committed to a process of sustainable viticulture with the objective of listening to and respecting the rhythm of nature, and to make it keep its rights. The vineyard lets nature act without forcing or constraining it. For example, the spraying of synthetic molecules has been banned by Patrick, the soils are regulated naturally by the constitution of meadows that allow him to live in autonomy, the fertilizers used are natural, the soils are irrigated by rain and groundwater ...

Innovative touch of the domain: music in the vineyards. For 5 years, the technology of the Genodics laboratory has been applied to the estate, by setting up speakers that emit a melody carrying organic waves. These waves are supposed to stimulate the vines in their production of proteins that they need to protect themselves from the onslaught of diseases or climate imbalances.
