The winemaker
Le Clos, Triguedina, a family history
In 1830, Etienne Baldès, then a farm worker, acquired the land of Clos Triguedina and planted the first vines. Since then, eight generations have successively managed this family estate. Clos Triguedina comes from the Occitan "me trigo de dina", meaning "it's getting late for dinner". This refers to the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, who used to stop for refreshments and utter this phrase as they passed by.
The end of the 19th century was marked by the Phylloxera crisis, an aphid from the United States that destroyed much of the French vineyards. After this devastation, in 1880 Etienne Baldès' son Charles Baldès took over Clos Triguedina and enlarged it. Around 1920, Emile Baldès took over the family business. Unfortunately, he was requisitioned for four years in a row during the First World War, and was unable to carry out his mission.
So it was left to his wife to look after the business for the next few years. René Baldès took over and helped create Cahors wines. His successor Jean Luc Baldès represents the eighth generation of the Baldès family. He initiated many changes, and for several years has been producing exquisite, accessible wines. Although the daughter of Jean-Luc and Sabine Baldès has every intention of taking over the estate in a few years' time, for the time being it's still her father who runs it.
The rich terroirs of Clos Triguedina
Located in the heart of the Cahors vineyards next to Puy l'Evêque to the south-west of Cahors, Clos Triguedina covers around 70 hectares, including around 65 hectares of reds and 5 hectares of whites, and produces around 400,000 bottles a year.
The land is bordered by greenery, close to the River Lot, and offers a diversity of terroirs, situated on clay-limestone and clay-siliceous soils, enabling the production of prestigious vintages. Malbec grapes account for more than three quarters of the estate's surface area, and Jean-Luc has earned a reputation as the "Master of Malbec".
Responsible growing methods
Clos Triguedina is now a unique heritage steeped in history. The cultivation of this vineyard is highly respectful not only of this long family tradition, but also of the soil. Clos Triguedina wines are made from green harvesting and leaf thinning is practiced on the various vines.
Jean-Luc tries to limit the use of phytosanitary products as much as possible and wishes to orientate his practices towards reasoned viticulture, respectful of people and the environment.
