The winemaker

The history of Château Montus

Alain Brumont acquired Château Montus in 1980, on a terroir where vine-growing dates back to the 18th century. The soil contains a high proportion of large, reddish pebbles, evidence of the formation of the Pyrenees 40 million years ago. Thanks to the hard work of Alain Brumont, his Madiran Château Montus is now renowned throughout France and internationally.

The terroir of Château Montus

The terroir of Château Montus is distinguished by its steep slopes, ranging from 20 to 40%, facing due south. The subsoil is composed of red and yellow clays. La Tyre, another part of the terroir, has a south-western exposure, giving it a milder sunshine. On the other hand, it is windier than Montus.

The three grape varieties of Château Montus

Tannat competes with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot from Bordeaux, Pinot from Burgundy and Syrah from the northern Côtes du Rhône. This grape variety is best suited to ageing wines. Its fruit brings depth, as well as powerful fruit flavors.

Petit Manseng brings acidity to wines. It gives them a touch of originality and complexity, while preserving a beautiful harmony.

Petit Courbu rivals the whites of Burgundy, Alsace or the Loire. It gives the wine smoothness and freshness.
