The winemaker
The history of Château Haut Monplaisir
Château Haut Monplaisir was bought by Cathy and Daniel Fournié in 1998. These self-taught winegrowers set out to create a range of wines based on the Malbec grape variety. They surrounded themselves with the best specialists, including Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe (operators of Château du Cèdre), two of the world's greatest "Malbec creators". Since 2015, Mathilde, the couple's daughter, has joined her parents. She is in charge of sales and marketing and is training to become a winemaker.
The Château Haut Monplaisir vineyard
The Château Haut Monplaisir vineyard covers 30 hectares. The vines are planted on the third terraces of the Cahors appellation. Facing due south, they benefit from ideal exposure from sunrise to sunset. On their arrival in 1998, the Fournié family began converting the estate to organic farming, a process which has now been completed. The vines are now grassed and all chemical weedkillers have been banned.
The Château Haut Monplaisir vineyard is planted almost exclusively with Malbec (or Cot) for the red grape varieties of the Cahors appellation. A small area is dedicated to Syrah. The white grape varieties are divided between a majority of Chardonnay, a lot of Viognier and a touch of Vermentino. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Average annual production is 150,000 bottles.
The Château Haut Monplaisir wine
Château Haut Monplaisir primarily offers several cuvées of red wines made from Malbec grapes. Their production is completed by a 100% Syrah wine. The reds are complemented by 2 rosés, 1 dry white and 1 sweet white.
