The winemaker
History
It was a series of twists and turns that shaped today's estate. It all began with Léon Verhaeghe in 1914. He fled his native Belgium during the First World War annexed during the First World War. He took refuge in the Lot and started a family that would see a first son, Charles. The latter met Marie-Thérèse Rives, who played a major role in his vision of the land. Indeed, through her family, she owned an agricultural farm. Charles, who helped her on the farm, developed a love for agriculture.
But this love is about to change, for although the farm he works on is a polyculture polyculture, he soon changed the subject. Seeing a few winegrowers around the property, he became increasingly interested in vines and wine. In 1958, he planted his first hectare of vines vines and applied his skills and knowledge to them. An education that several years before bottling his first wine in 1973. Unfortunately, the dream was interrupted by Parkinson's disease, diagnosed by Charles's doctor.
The vineyard became too complicated for our protagonist. sons (Pascal and Jean-Marc) take over. Pascal Verhaeghe followed an atypical atypical path before arriving, having studied mathematics, followed by a passion for motorcycles. During a visit to a winegrower friend in Burgundy, he ended up leaving everything behind to train as a winemaker...
Returning home
He learned everything from Jean-Marie Guffens, then went to the USA to the famous Napa Valley to see a different culture and techniques. His brother Jean-Marc, trained at La Tour Blanche, one of the benchmarks in the Sauternes region. Together, they have taken over the family project, incorporating a greater determination to succeed than ever before. than ever.
For better organization, they have divided the tasks between them. Pascal concentrates on Pascal concentrates on winemaking and sales, while Jean-Marc is affiliated with the vineyard. Over the past fifteen years, they have developed the domaine in an extraordinary way, making it known throughout France and abroad. Pascal's sons, Jules and Robin, have now joined the domaine and intend to learn from their father and uncle this ancestral know-how.
And what better way to learn than on a 27-hectare estate with 90% Malbec, 5% Tannat and tannat and 5% merlot. The vineyard is divided into 3 parcels, with the largest (13 hectares) located on limestone soils producing fine, elegant and rounded wines. The other two siliceous soil, enabling Pascal to produce powerful, rich wines with a long long on the palate...
