The winemaker
The history of Château de Haute-Serre
Château de Haute-Serre is one of the oldest and most important wine-producing châteaux in Cahors. During the golden age of Cahors wines in the Middle Ages, its vineyards covered more than 1,000 hectares.
At the end of the 19th century, Château de Haute-Serre was not spared the phylloxera crisis that ravaged France's vineyards, particularly those of the region. The estate was abandoned until the 1970s.
It was at this time that Georges Vigouroux, a third-generation wine merchant from the Lot, became interested in Château de Haute-Serre. He was looking for the ideal terroir to replant Malbec vines, and knew that the region's soils were favorable.
Georges decided to buy Château de Haute-Serre and restore it to its former glory. The first Cahors AOC vintage was bottled in 1976, and since then, production has continued to grow, both in quantity and quality, until Haute-Serre was recognized as one of the Premiers Crus of Cahors.
Today, Georges' son Bertrand-Gabriel Vigouroux continues to produce the wines of Château de Haute-Serre. Thanks to him, they remain one of the most prestigious references in the Cahors appellation.
The Château de Haute-Serre vineyard
The Château de Haute-Serre vineyard is located on a cadurcian clay-limestone causse. It covers 60 hectares, planted mainly with Malbec. A few vines of Tannat and Merlot complete the vineyard.
Château de Haute-Serre also produces a few Sauvignon and Chardonnay grapes for white wine production. The winery and cellar have been strategically built in the middle of the vineyards, in order to transport the grapes more quickly.
