The History of Chambert Castle
The archives already mention the Chambert Castle in the 10th century, but it is from the 13th century that its lands are exploited, with already 300 hectares. They surround the castle which is at the time a fortified farm, protected by its round towers and its ditches. Various lords succeeded each other at the head of the property.
Phylloxera began to devastate the vineyards of France in the 19th century and that of Château de Chambert was not spared, with three quarters of its production destroyed.
At that time, the Château de Chambert belonged to Louis Bataille and his wife Mélanie. Their son, Marie Désiré Pierre Amédée Bataille would later become the youngest general in France. The estate produced wine that was exported throughout Europe and to America.
In 1886, a fire destroyed three quarters of the castle and only its central part was preserved during its reconstruction. The two round towers that belonged to the castle in the 16th century were not rebuilt until 1985.
In 1914, General Bataille died in the service of France, on the Vosges front. His religious sister inherited the Château de Chambert, but neglected it.
It was not until 1973 that a wine merchant from Correze, Marc Delgoulet, fell under the spell of this immense wasteland. The vineyard has escaped all intensive cultivation and the use of chemical fertilizers. The land is pure and perfect for rebuilding a vineyard of the highest quality.
The first vintage of the new Chateau de Chambert was offered in 1978.
The Chateau de Chambert vineyard
The lands of Chateau de Chambert represent a total of 120 hectares of vineyards, land and woods. The vineyard covers 65 hectares of which 45 hectares directly surround the castle. It is driven biodynamically, is certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter and Biodyvin.
The average altitude of the vineyards is 300 meters, which produces a thermal amplitude greater than that of the plain. As a result, the grapes ripen later. The Scottish cows of the Highlands are used to maintain the soil. They graze in the vineyards during the fall and winter and in the meadows of the estate during the spring and summer.
The entirety of the vines belong to the AOC Cahors. The grape varieties are 80% Malbec, 17% Merlot and 3% Chardonnay.
The wines of Château de Chambert
The estate's historic cuvée bears its name, Chateau de Chambert. It is composed entirely of Malbec from old plots.
The other cuvées are:
- Grand Vin from the oldest parcels of the estate, entirely composed of Malbec ;
- Parcels: Cerisiers, Petite Maison and Le Puits;
- Rogomme, a curiosity elaborated according to a Quercy recipe, more than three hundred years old;
- The Bistro Wines offered in red, rosé and white.
