Cahors is a small wine-growing region on the Lot. In the 19th century, its dark, almost black-red wines competed with Bordeaux. They are traditionally made from malbec, locally known as cot or auxerrois. Today, this grape variety is most often blended with the very supple Merlot. Wines made on the ancient alluvial deposits of the Lot are the most complex.
The 1988 vintage is a classic, with an advantage for the right bank. Some Pomerols and Saint Emilions eclipsed their 1989 and 1990 younger siblings in elegance. The red wines were very tannic, very colorful, very complex. These are long-ageing wines, which can be expected to develop a fine, powerful bouquet as they age.
