The winemaker
The history of Domaine Gilles Berlioz
Gilles Berlioz is from Savoie. He started out as a landscape gardener. After inheriting a small parcel of vines (Jacquère and Mondeuse), he and his wife Christine decided to become winegrowers (1990). Gradually, they bought additional plots and organized their estate into distinct blocks. Gilles, self-taught and a novice as a winemaker, did not hesitate to distinguish himself with the principle of "one terroir, one grape variety, one cuvée". The nature-loving couple converted their vineyard to organic farming in the late 90s. The Berlioz family chose to keep their estate small (less than 5 hectares), so as to be able to give it specific attention: ploughing with horses, biodynamic viticulture... Thanks to their love and respect for the terroir, Gilles and Christine Berlioz produce wines that make Savoie the cradle of great, distinctive wines.
The values of Domaine Gilles Berlioz
In 2016, Gilles and Christine Berlioz renamed their estate "Domaine partagé" because it was important to them to emphasize "the exchange and solidarity that are part of the estate's DNA". The Domaine's permanent team and their winegrower friends share the same determination to go the extra mile in the quest for quality. All are convinced that quality is enhanced by biodynamic viticulture: ensuring a natural balance in the soil that is also beneficial to the vines. On this estate, there is no hesitation in reducing volumes, which results in a balance between sugar and acidity in the fruit. Of course, the commercial aspect is important, as it is in any business, but what takes precedence is respect for nature's cycle: here, bottling is dictated by the lunar calendar, not by commercial demands.
Singular wines from Domaine Gilles Berliozaux original labels
"Cricri", a dry, fruity white wine made from Jacquère grapes and "Bibi" a red wine made from Gamay Mondeuse are simple, generous and luminous wines. Domaine Gilles Berlioz offers several cuvées made from Roussane grapes: "Les Christine", a floral, slightly honeyed Chignin Bergeron with the depth of a Grand Cru, "Les Filles", a generous, gourmet Chignin-Bergeron with floral, fruity and spicy notes, and "Les Fripons", a gourmet, aromatic wine with high minerality. Finally, in its Vins de Savoie AOP range, the Domaine produces " ...El...Hem ", a Roussette with a complex nose and vibrant mouthfeel, " Le Jaja " Vin de Savoie Chignin AOP (Jacquère grape variety) , a pure, precise wine with a saline finish, and " La ... Deuse " Vin de Savoie AOP red Mondeuse grape variety characterized by its aromatic finesse and refined texture.
