The winemaker
Here, Mother Nature is king, and this can be seen at all levels! In the vineyards as well as in the cellars, everything is done as simply as possible to make tasty and ecological Savoy wines.
For many generations, the family has farmed in mixed farming in the Grésivaudan area, about thirty kilometers from Grenoble. We are here in the heart of Savoy, at the foot of the Alpine furrows. The cultivation of cereals, nuts and fruits will be abandoned in 1988 in favor of the sole cultivation of the vine.
It was Frédéric who decided to take this turn when he took over the family business. Introducing new grape varieties and working with more environmentally friendly methods, Frédéric turned the family heritage upside down. Today, thanks to the precious help of his brother David and his son Clément, both in the vineyard and in the cellars, this meticulous work can be continued. The arrival of the brother and then the son has also allowed the estate to expand and take over the domain of Michel Grisard, pope of biodynamics in Savoy and great defender of forgotten grape varieties.
The choice of organic farming is also explained by a desire to reflect all the authenticity and purity of the Savoyard terroir. The estate is located at the foot of the Granier mountain: this mountainous relief at altitude is the norm in Savoie. The 9 hectares of the Giachino estate are located on an ancient glacial moraine that only the vine has managed to tame. Jacquère is the queen here: it makes up more than two thirds of the estate's vineyard. Alongside this typically Savoyard grape variety, we also find Mondeuse, Gamay, Persan and Roussette.
The Giachino estate is conducted in organic and biodynamic agriculture. This results in a set of practices that listen to the natural balance and cycle of the vine throughout the year. From pruning to harvesting, the quality of the wood and then the grapes must be optimal. Indeed, only an irreproachable raw material allows that no adjuvant, sulfites or other oenological products are then added to the wines.
The wines of Domaine Giachino render the Savoyard terroir in all its authenticity. The cool climate, the clay soils and the altitude grant a real freshness to the Savoy wines. The slope of the hillsides allows the grapes to be watered with sunshine almost all year round. It is therefore a mixture between freshness and warmth that Frédéric and his team are working to sublimate. The range of wines produced is quite extensive: red, white, single variety, blended... there is something for everyone! The advantage of "natural" wines, besides not giving you a headache, is that they offer themselves differently each time you open a bottle. The domain will always surprise you!
