The winemaker
Here, Mother Nature reigns supreme, and this is evident at every level! In the vineyards as in the cellars, everything is done as simply as possible to produce tasty, environmentally-friendly Savoy wines.
For many generations, the family has cultivated mixed farming land in the Grésivaudan area, some thirty kilometers from Grenoble. We're in the heart of Savoie, at the foot of the Alpine furrows. In 1988, cereals, nuts and fruit were abandoned in favor of vines alone.
When Frédéric took over the reins of the family business, he decided to make the change. Introducing new grape varieties and working with more environmentally-friendly methods, Frédéric turned the family heritage upside down. Today, thanks to the invaluable help of his brother David and son Clément, both in the vineyard and in the winery, this meticulous work can continue. The arrival of the brother and then the son has also enabled the domaine to expand and take over the estate of Michel Grisard, the pope of biodynamics in Savoie and a great advocate of forgotten grape varieties.
The choice of organic farming is also explained by a desire to reflect all the authenticity and purity of the Savoyard terroir. The estate is located at the foot of the Granier mountain: this high-altitude mountainous terrain is the norm in Savoie. The 9 hectares of Domaine Giachino are located on an ancient glacial moraine that only vines have managed to tame. Jacquère is king here, making up more than 2/3 of the estate's vineyard. Alongside this typically Savoyard grape, we also find Mondeuse, Gamay, Persan and Roussette.
The Giachino estate is farmed organically and biodynamically. This results in a set of practices that take into account the natural balance and cycle of the vine throughout the year. From pruning to harvesting, the quality of the wood and then the grapes must be optimal. In fact, only an irreproachable raw material ensures that no additives, sulfites or other oenological products are added to the wines.
Domaine Giachino wines reflect the authenticity of the Savoyard terroir. The cool climate, clay soils and altitude give Savoy wines a real freshness. The slope of the hillsides, on the other hand, ensures that the grapes are bathed in sunshine almost all year round. It's this blend of freshness and warmth that Frédéric and his team strive to sublimate. The range of wines produced is quite extensive: reds, whites, single varietals, blends... there's something for everyone! The great thing about "natural" wines, apart from not giving you a headache, is that they offer a different taste every time you open a bottle. The estate will always surprise you!
