The winemaker
The domain
The conversion to organic farming was completed in 2008 with the award of certification, and the estate has been run biodynamically since 2012. Yields are deliberately controlled to promote the production of quality wines. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and vinification is carried out without sulfur, using indigenous yeasts. The two brothers are independent winegrowers, working according to traditional methods using horses to work the land and following the lunar calendar to care for the vines. No weedkillers or pesticides are used on the estate's land.
The vineyard extends over 12 hectares with 9 hectares of red grape varieties (mainly Mondeuse Noire, with only 3% divided between Persan and Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc) and 3 hectares of white grape varieties (two-thirds Roussanne, one-third Altesse topped up with Jacquère). The vines are 40 years old on average, and the soils are mainly glacial moraine and hillside.
The wines of Château de Mérande
Cuvées La Noire, Latitude N45, and Le Comte Rouge are made from Mondeuse, the estate's signature grape variety. They illustrate the full potential of this unusual red grape variety, but Château de Mérande's benchmark cuvée remains La belle Romaine, a wine with good body, structure and luscious fruit. La Comtesse Blanche is an expressive, invigorating white wine, with complex aromas of white flowers, beeswax and citrus. It reveals magnificent relief and a well-balanced palate.
