Appellation Vinsobres

Discovery of the Vinsobres appellation

The Vinsobres AOC, located in the commune of the same name in the Drôme department, was not always devoted to vines. Indeed, the region rather cultivated olive trees, until 1956, a year that was marked by major frost episodes. Wine growing then replaced the olive trees. The appellation now covers more than 560 hectares of hillsides around the small village of Vinsobres.

The grape varieties chosen in the appellation are grenache, mourvèdre and syrah. They benefit from a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, but cooled by the mistral. The AOC has a nice diversity of soils, but there are mostly stony and marly soils.

The red wines of Vinsobres

The red Vinsobres have a garnet colour. The nose is marked by red fruits in particular. After a few years of ageing, the wine develops scents of ripe or stewed fruit, kirsch, leather and spices. When the wines are aged in barrel, they reveal roasted, smoky and vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is powerful, rich, with silky tannins and a nice roundness. The wine offers a finish of ripe fruit which thus prolongs the nose. Vinsobres reveal their full potential after one or two years of ageing.

Vinsobres goes perfectly with meats simmered, a Provencal daube for example or a leg of lamb. Roast poultry will go very well with this red wine, as will vegetable stews or ratatouille. Garrigue flavours such as thyme and rosemary are enhanced by this wine.
