The winemaker
The history of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné was founded in 1834 on the hill of Hermitage, belonging to the commune of Tain l'Hermitage. After being taken over by the Frey family in 2006, it has retained its authenticity and continued to produce prestigious cuvées, including the Chapelle de l'Hermitage.
Today, Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné is run by Caroline Frey, a passionate and talented oenologist and winemaker. Her wines are red or white and belong to the Saint Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf du Pape, Côte Rôtie, Condrieu or Muscat de Beaumes de Venise appellations.
Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné vineyards
The Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné vineyard covers 125 hectares, including 103 hectares of reds and 22 hectares of whites. The grape varieties used for the red wines are Syrah only. The white wines are made from 39% Marsanne, 33% Viognier and 28% Roussanne. Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné produces an average of 300,000 bottles a year.
The vineyards of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné benefit from exceptional soils, made up of small white pebbles. The vines benefit from a warm microclimate and south-facing exposure.
The terroir is treated with the utmost respect. It is farmed organically and biodynamically. A horse and a mule share the ploughing work, which turns over the soil to aerate it, encourage microbiological life, and root the vines.
