The History of Maison Ogier

Before delving into the history of Maison Ogier, it's important to note that viticulture has a very long history in the Côtes du Rhône. Tracing its origins back to Massalia (Marseilles), vines soon arrived in the region, enabling the growth of a new activity: viticulture. The Middle Ages also left their mark on the vineyards. Maison Ogier takes its name from this period! Ogier was a Danish warrior who fought alongside Charlemagne, King of France, in the 9th century AD. After the battles, he fell in love with the Rhône Valley and settled there... Several centuries later, Maison Ogier was founded. The year 1859 saw its birth in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the world's most prestigious appellations. Antoine Ogier, one of the descendants of our Danish-born warrior, decided to launch his own wine venture. He was followed by subsequent generations, all keen to showcase the potential of their terroir. In 1995, a major turning point came with the arrival of a new management team: a new approach to vineyard management and winemaking was put in place. In 2000, the company expanded with the purchase of Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes, a Châteauneuf icon. Then, in 2004, it bought an organic vineyard: Domaine Notre-Dame de Cousignac.

Vineyard, winemaking style and wines of Maison Ogier

It's this diversification that enables Maison Ogier to excel in the wine market. In fact, it offers 4 ranges (Expression des terroirs, Tradition, Héritage and Oratorio), each with its own special characteristics. To produce them, it relies on grape varieties typical of the region (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre) and emblematic terroirs composed notably of red sandstone and rolled pebbles. Added to this is over 150 years' experience in maturing great wines. The winery, now a hundred years old, boasts an impressive stock of barrels and vats, enabling the production of wines combining finesse, purity and depth of aroma. Ageing and vinification are precisely adapted to the grape varieties and terroirs in which they are grown. The winemakers also take decisions to ensure that the wines meet the quality criteria they set themselves, every year. Tasting a Maison Ogier wine is like tasting a part of the region's history. You can feel the tradition, the ancestral know-how and the perfect viticulture bearing fruit. In fact, it's possible to visit the estate for this tasting as well as a tour of the winery, enough to make you fall in love, just like Ogier did...
