The winemaker

House history

The history of the Chapoutier house began in 1808 when Maison Clavet et Compagnie was founded in Tain, in the Rhône Valley. In 1879, Polydor Chapoutier bought the first vines and began winemaking. After years of expansion and hard work, the company was renamed Maison M. Chapoutier in 1955.

In the 1980s, under Michel Chapoutier's leadership, biodynamic viticulture is introduced to the estate as a production philosophy and rigor.

Today, the vineyard covers 360 hectares, spread over several estates in the Rhone valley, Beaujolais, Provence, Roussillon, Australia, Portugal, Alsace and Champagne.

A love of terroir and nature

Everywhere, the philosophy of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is strictly adhered to, and vinification is minimally interventionist to best express the terroir, climate and identities of different vintages.

Maison Chapoutier also stands out for its sense of respect. Respect for the terroir, the soil, the plant, the estate's employees and, above all, the consumer. Respect is what gives meaning to wine. Of course, respect also means conviviality and generosity, because wine is all about sharing.

Particularly committed to biodynamic viticulture, Maison M. Chapoutier has observed its terroir and diagnosed life's ills in order to act to clean them up and make biology a priority once again. A plant cannot live alone; it is always part of a system, a body, a whole. It's the whole, all the vines that make up the plot, the soil from which the plants feed, the light that the vine absorbs to grow...

Maison Chapoutier is a vineyard that fights to assert its convictions, regardless of fashion, and with a focus on the health of the terroir and the vines.
