Appellation Luberon

The terroir and the many grape varieties of the Luberon

Vines were already present in the Luberon in ancient times. The appellation area of the AOC Luberon is today nestled within the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon. The vines are grown on the different slopes of the petit and grand Luberon massifs. The soil is rich and presents particularities according to its geographical situation.

In the area around Apt, red clay dominates, at the foot of the massifs, it islimestone and, in the Pays d'Aigues, the soil becomes much moresandy. The mountains create significant thermal amplitudes which influence the wine. The climate is divided between the coolness of the summits and the Rhone influences, at the foot of the mountain ranges.

The Luberon appellation has the particularity of blending numerous grape varieties.

The Syrah brings an intense colour, it is rich in alcohol and very aromatic. The variety develops extremely varied aromas: violet, banana, olive, liquorice, cocoa, cinnamon, blackcurrant, cherry, bitter chocolate, leather, spices, pepper, raspberry, blackberry, undergrowth, truffle, etc. The Grenache likes the stony and dry part of the Luberon terroir. It intensifies blends with full-bodied and heady flavours. Its aromas are often shared with those of Syrah, adding ripe stone fruits, such as prunes and Morello cherries.

The Mourvèdre is a high-quality grape variety that gives its beautiful colour to the wine and brings its share of rich, powerful tannins. It smells of cinnamon, acacia flowers, prune and spices. The Carignan is chosen to flesh out the wine. This powerful and colourful grape variety is a bit astringent. It develops aromas of banana and herbaceous plants, always with a background of minerality. The Cinsault evokes lime blossom, almond, raspberry and hazelnut. Clairette blanche is chosen for its freshness. It brings aromas of fennel and apple.

The Vermentino is selected to bring balance. Its scents are diverse: wild dill, fennel, hazelnut, hawthorn, chamomile, vine peaches, grapefruit, pear, apple. Bourboulenc brings citrus and field flower scents. The Roussanne brings finesse, with scents of green coffee, honeysuckle, honey, hawthorn, narcissus and iris. The Marsanne is chosen for its fresh taste of jasmine, fresh lychees, acacia honey, white peach, baked apple and citrus. Ugni Blanc brings acidity, as well as nervousness. The Viognier allows the wine to become a little fatter and suppler. It reveals aromas of honeysuckle, wax, lime, quince and mango.
