The winemaker
The history of the estate
The Avril family settled in Châteauneuf du Pape during the 17th century, and it was in 1896 that the first vintage of Clos des Papes was born, at the initiative of Paul-Vincent Avril.
In 1936, he was one of the precursors of the creation of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. Afterwards, he passed the reins of the estate to his son Roger Avril.
Paul Avril arrived at the domain at the age of 26 and worked to make the domain even more prestigious by promoting the Burgundian balance and harmony of Châteauneuf du Pape. This work is notably influenced by his oenology studies in Dijon.
In 2009, Paul-Vincent Avril succeeded his father after several experiences in the wine industry including a stint at Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
Today, the estate remains faithful to tradition, far from the current wine trends: a single vintage of Châteauneuf du Pape in red and one in white, as well as a second vintage, the Petit vin d'Avril.
The vineyard
The Paul Avril estate currently covers 32 hectares, including 3 hectares of white. The vineyard is divided into 24 parcels, located on the best terroirs of Chateauneuf du Pape, including 7 hectares of "la Crau".
The terroir of the vineyard stands out for its finesse and power. The latter is quite diverse, and there are sandy soils, classic stony soils, more clayey soils, north sloping plots and others more exposed to the Rhone heat.
For the black grapes, 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Vaccarèse, Muscardin and Counoise. For the white Châteauneuf du Pape, the vines are shared between Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussane, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picoul.
Each year, nearly 65,000 bottles are produced in red, for 8,000 bottles of white.
The wines/The style of the wines
The Clos des Papes rouge is a wine with a ruby red color with tile-like highlights. Generally, its nose is quite complex and expressive, mixing floral and fruity notes with hints of spices (pepper). On the palate, the wine is ample and offers a beautiful harmonious fruity matter and long in the mouth.
The Clos des Papes white offers a beautiful lemon yellow color with golden highlights. Its nose is floral with a nice lot of citrus, white flowers and fresh pear. On the palate, the wine is ample, lifted by a touch of minerality. The finish is charming, with hints of dried and candied fruits.
The Petit vin d'Avril is the estate's second cuvée. More affordable, it has a ruby red color and a greedy, fruity and spicy nose. On the palate, the wine is warm and fruity, it offers a nice drinkability and could be enjoyed with a nice roasted leg of lamb.
