The winemaker
An estate steeped in the history of the Rhone valley
To be precise, this estate has been cultivated under the same family since 1481 in Mauves, Ardèche, and today Jean-Louis Chave represents the sixteenth generation of winemakers at the head of the estate. Over several decades, he has completely deformed the vineyard, giving it the appearance of a Japanese garden.
Towards the end of the 20th century, the Jean-Louis Chave estate decided to expand and set itself new goals. In the late 1990s, the Bachasson hillside, in Saint-Joseph, was reinvested in honor of the family's ancestors, who had once started winegrowing there. In 2009, the Clos Florentin was restored, bringing new life to the plots devastated by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century.
In the cellar, the winemaking process focuses on complementary blends, controlled ripening and meticulous barrel ageing. All these processes make the estate's wines exquisite and true to the magical hillside that gives birth to the grapes. The finest "quartiers" of Beaume, l'Ermite, can thus be felt in the reds, making for a taste experience as intense as it is unique.
A typical wine: L'Hermitage
Matured on clay and gravel soils, L'Hermitage from Jean-Louis Chave is a wine with good cellaring potential that will be delighted with a fine côte de boeuf persillée. With its intense ruby-red color and red fruit nose, it's full-bodied but also fresh and fruity on the palate. An absolute delight, a must from the Rhone Valley!
