The winemaker
The Jaume family is a pioneer family of the Vinsobres appellation, located in the Rhône Valley. Their domain extends over 100 hectares around the village, facing the giant of Provence: the Mont Ventoux. Rich with a respectful vision of nature, it is from these principles that Domaine Jaume Pascal & Richard wines are born.
Domaine Jaume Pascal & Richard has been around since 1905 and has been passed down from generation to generation within the family. It all began with Henri Chauvet who, along with Baron Leroy, gave birth to the estate. With the help of the instigator of the appellation d'origine contrôlée, the AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages Vinsobres was born. In the 1980s, Pascal and Richard took over the reins of the estate and, following the conquering spirit of their forefathers, expanded the family's properties to complete the business: Domaine Courtois by Domaine Jaume, Famille Jaume and most recently, in 2020, La Main des Mômes.
Today the new generation composed of Anthony, Vincent and Audrey joined them to continue the ideal of responsible viticulture of the house characterized by a reasoned fight and a respect for the terroir. In 2018, the house was even certified High Environmental Value, guaranteeing the veracity of its commitments. Finally, now, and since 2006, Vinsobres is recognized as a vintage of the Cotes du Rhone and enjoys its own appellation.
The history of Vinsobres goes back to Antiquity and to the period of the Romans who would be a priori at the origin of the establishment of the vine in the area. Nestled in the heart of the Drôme Provençale, at the foot of the Pre-Alps at an altitude of about 300 meters, the vineyard of Domaine Jaume Pascal & Richard faces the Mont Ventoux.
The vines, planted on the one hand on clay-limestone slopes, and on the other hand on hills with clay, sand and silt soils, enjoy a climate conducive to the proper development of the ripening of the berries. The winters are temperate but beaten by the Mistral wind which then cools the hot summer months of the region. The regular and balanced rainfall allows the vines to blossom perfectly on this terroir where the Jaume family cultivates as many red grape varieties as white grape varieties.
On the red side, we find the traditional Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre, typical of the region. As for the whites, the iconic Viognier is surrounded by the lesser known Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne and Clairette.
Domaine Jaume offers its fans a range of eight wines so five reds, two whites and a rosé. The red wines of the house are the perfect reflection of the terroir since they are vinified under the specifications of the Vinsobres appellation. They invariably have aromas of jammy red fruits, a full mouth and a balanced structure. The white wines in Côtes du Rhône are sometimes characterized by aromas of white flesh fruits, sometimes by floral and citrus notes. In any case, both are fresh and lively wines.
