The winemaker

The history of the Domaine des Peyre

The Domaine des Peyre is located in the Luberon, on the edge of the Via Domitia. This Roman road is the oldest road in France and was already leading to the vineyards of the time. Indeed, the Romans who came to conquer Gaul built roads as they progressed in the country. They set up vineyards to supply the soldiers of their army and to give them the courage to work.

The Domaine des Peyre is therefore located on one of the lands that have been used for wine production for thousands of years. The original Roman villa became a farm, then was considered a bastide, before becoming an estate. It owes its name to the chapel of Saint Peyre (formerly San Peyre) located on its territory.

The Domaine des Peyre has had its ups and downs over its 2000 year history. When it was taken over by Georges Antoun and Patricia Alexandre in 2012, it was in a sorry state. The vegetation was dilapidated due to the massive use of herbicides and pesticides, the vines were poorly maintained and there were even oak trees starting to grow in the middle of the vines.

In the absence of production tools, the meagre harvest was processed by the local cooperative. The buildings were unsanitary and the historic chapel was used as storage for farm equipment.

The new owners had to carry out a colossal amount of work, with a large investment to renovate the estate, restructure the vineyard and build a wine-making cellar. Today, Domaine des Peyre is magnificent and produces exquisite wines.

The Domaine des Peyre vineyard

Domaine des Peyre produces an average of 80,000 bottles per year. Half is red wine, 40% rosé and the remaining 10% is white wine. The grape varieties include several traditional Rhone Valley varieties: Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Merlot, among others. They are used to produce wines with the Ventoux, Luberon and Mediterranean Geographical Identification appellations.
