The winemaker
The Ville Rouge estate, a story from father to son
Domaine de la Ville Rouge has all the makings of a family business. It was founded in 1919 by Paul Girard. Its beginnings were modest, with only a few hectares of vines and an obligatory visit to the cooperative winery. Gaston took over, followed by Edgar in 1975. From father to son, the land was handed down, but above all, a unique know-how and philosophy. In 2006, Sébastien bought the entire estate and joined the line of winemakers. With his wife Audrey, he brings a breath of fresh air to Domaine de la Ville Rouge, while respecting the essence of the estate. Vinification now takes place exclusively on the estate.
The Domaine de la Ville Rouge, divided between two terroirs
The Domaine de la Ville Rouge is spread over some twenty hectares. It is divided between the Crozes-Hermitage appellation on the left bank of the Rhône and the Saint-Joseph appellation on its right bank. The Crozes-Hermitage plots are flat, composed of layered pebbles and red clay. Saint-Joseph, on the other hand, is made up of steeply sloping terrain with a high proportion of decomposing granite. br>
Since 2009, Sébastien and Audrey have been cultivating their vines organically, according to biodynamic principles. Respect for nature and terroir is at the heart of their work. Hand-picking and low yields are proof of this.
The Domaine de La Ville Rouge focuses on one grape variety: syrah
On the Domaine de la Ville Rouge, Syrah is the king grape variety. In both Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, it accounts for the vast majority of harvests. It gives the wine its powerful spicy aromas and balance. Roussanne and Marsanne are harvested for the white Crozes-Hermitage. The domaine also produces IGP de la Drôme wines, whose fragrant whites are of the highest quality.
