The winemaker

The Domaine de la Royère is run by a multi-talented family

The estate was created in 1988, at the same time as the Lubéron appellation. The Hugues family has handed down the art of vine-growing from generation to generation, but the passion that drives them goes beyond that. It's clear that they need to let their land express itself in all its multiplicity. This driving force led them to install a still to distill the grape marc and to start producing olive oil. They follow through on their initiative and open a Museum of the History of Olive Oil. In addition, the family produces lavender honey, which underlines the logic of their approach.

Characteristics of the La Royère terroir and vineyard

La Royère benefits from a rich terroir that enables it to grow wines, brandies and also olive oil. Its sandy soil, mixed with pebbles in places, is typical of the Rhône Valley and favors slow drainage. The vines range in age from around 30 to over 100 years. Harvesting is mainly mechanical, to guarantee the quality of the wines produced. The estate's 40 hectares have been farmed organically since conversion in 2017. The soil is sandy, with pebbles in some plots. It's a typical Rhone Valley terroir. Some of the vines planted on this land are a hundred years old.

Harvesting at Domaine de la Royère is predominantly manual. Yields are limited and biodiversity is respected. The winemakers are also determined to limit inputs after vatting, so as to preserve a pure expression of terroir.

La Royère wines

La Royère relies on a multitude of grape varieties to make its wines. Some fifteen grape varieties are grown on the estate, and a dozen cuvées are produced. For its red and rosé wines, La Royère favors the emblematic black Syrah and Grenache. Its white wines are mainly made from blends of Grenache blanc and Vermentino. The winemakers produce around ten cuvées using some fifteen grape varieties in the Lubéron appellation and IGP Méditerranée et Vaucluse.

Syrah and Grenache are the estate's favorite grape varieties, providing the foundation for red and rosé wines. White wines are made mainly from Grenache Blanc and Vermentino. Certain cuvées can be aged in vats for up to 24 months to develop the characteristics of these grape varieties. The range is completed by the production of Vins Doux Naturels and olive brandies.
