The winemaker
The Domaine de Fontenille is an exceptional wine estate, located in the heart of the Luberon regional nature park. You can go and taste the wines on site, as the family home of the estate has been transformed into a luxury hotel, with a starred gastronomic restaurant.
The Fontenille estate has retained its original appearance, dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The estate extends around a bastide with typical Provencal architecture. The vines stretch as far as the eye can see over the Luberon, sharing the landscape with wild areas dominated by cedars and hundred-year-old plane trees. Already in 1638, 12 hectares of vines are mentioned in the land register, rising to 35 hectares in 1748. Since 2014, the vineyard has been completely renovated, with integrated and organic farming. A new winery has been built, while respecting the traditional architecture.
Domaine de Fontenille benefits from an exceptional terroir. Thanks to generous sunshine and the mistral of Provence which whips the grapes and cleans them, the vine grows generously on this clay-limestone and stony soil. Organic farming exploits the slightly sloping hillsides to minimise treatments and respect nature's cycle. The estate's production includes 50% rosé, 35% red and 15% white. You will find the most emblematic grape varieties of the region: syrah, white grenache, black grenache, cinsault, rolle and clairette.
The composition of the Domaine de Fontenille rosé is 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Cinsault. The rosé wine is fresh and aromatic. Flavours of red berries and raspberries dominate. There is also a slight rose fragrance, as well as a hint of citrus, enhanced by a light bouquet of sweet spices. The Domaine de Fontenille rosé goes well with all light summer dishes, especially salads with citrus fruit. It is also suitable for fruit salads and sorbets.
The Domaine de Fontenille white wine is made from 40% white grenache, 40% rolle and 20% clairette. The wine is deliciously fresh, with aromas of white flowers and peaches, as well as a more or less perceptible acidic note. It is perfect with fish in sauce or on the barbecue.
The red wine of Domaine de Fontenille blends 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. The grapes are picked at their optimum maturity, then fermented and matured in concrete vats which bring out the aromas of ripe red fruit, with spicy notes. The wine is full-bodied. It is intense and complex, which gives it its place alongside game dishes, such as wild boar. It is also a wonderful accompaniment to chocolate desserts.
