The winemaker
The Domain
The origins of Beaurenard go back to the 17th century. In 1695, the estate was then called Boisrenard. The vineyard includes 32 hectares in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, but also 25 hectares in the Rhone Valley in Rasteau and 6 hectares in the Côtes du Rhône appellation. The exceptional terroir of the region is perfectly expressed in Beaurenard, where we find rolled pebbles, mistral and strong sunshine.
The grape varieties are characteristic of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, and the estate has vines that are 45 years old on average, in the 13 typical grape varieties. This "symphony of grape varieties" allows for blends offering powerful and balanced wines with a complex aromatic bouquet. Thus the vineyard is planted with Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Mouvèdre, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin and Vaccarèse for the red grapes, as well as Roussane, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Picardan for the whites.
In addition, a conservatory of authorized grape varieties in the appellation is set up, from vines of the oldest vines of the estate.
Organic and biodynamic viticulture
The 60 hectares of the estate are cultivated in organic agriculture certified by Ecocert and benefit from biodynamic methods, recognized by the Demeter label. No chemicals are used, natural practices are favored for all vineyard care such as respecting lunar cycles, applying biodynamic preparations, nettle, yarrow horsetail, yarrow or chamomile teas or implementing thoughtful and controlled weed control.
The work of the vines is mainly done by hand in the respect of the rhythm of the seasons. The team, sometimes assisted by seasonal workers, manually prunes, disbuds, works the soil, weeds and harvests. Reflections and experiments are also conducted to protect the genetic heritage of the vineyard's grape varieties and to develop grape varieties containing less sugar and therefore less alcohol, which will be better able to provide aromatic complexity, even with global warming.
The wines
Domaine de Beaurenard produces nine cuvées. This includes the estate's flagship cuvée, the Châteauneuf du Pape rouge du domaine de Beaurenard, blended with the 13 grape varieties the estate has, with Grenache predominating. This great blended wine is the perfect reflection of the diversity and harmony between terroirs and grape varieties of the estate. It is a wine in the fruit, crisp, supple and racy with a fresh and delicate aromatic palette.
The 2019 vintage Châteauneuf du Pape blanc is one of the finest of the decade. This soft, fresh white wine offers notes of white flowers with a lovely saline finish.
Boisrenard is a red Chateauneuf du pape made from old vines of the estate's 13 grape varieties and predominantly Grenache. It is a fruity and generous wine with silky tannins and a dense structure. Boisrenard is also produced in white. It is made from old vines of the six white grape varieties of the estate, with a dominant of Roussanne and Clairette. It is a racy, salty white wine with a nice creaminess.
The estate also produces GranPartita, a singular red Châteauneuf du Pape expressing well the identity of the appellation, Rasteau, a fruity and spicy red wine with very Provencal notes of thyme and rosemary, Les Argiles Bleues, a fine red wine with great minerality and delicate tannins, a Côte du Rhône rouge supple and greedy and Rasteau, a sweet natural red wine 100% Grenache noir, very balanced, between spicy notes and sweet flavors of black and red jammy fruits.
