The winemaker
The History of Domaine Charvin
The Charavin family has been in the Orange area since 1550. These farmers settled on the land of the present estate in 1851, when Guillaume Charavin was the head of the family. At that time, only four hectares were reserved for the vineyard. The wine was made on the farm and then sold to the trade.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate is held by Elie Charvin and his wife. The family name lost an A, due to an administrative error. The vines had already taken on more importance on the farmland. As everywhere in France, the vineyard was devastated by the phylloxera crisis and had to be entirely reconstituted.
At the end of the 1960s, Guillaume Charvin inherited a 20-hectare vineyard. It was then Laurent's turn to take over the business and profoundly change its operation.
Rather than continuing with his usual wine merchant, he is now in charge of the destiny of his wine, starting with the bottling at the estate. Laurent is also responsible for adapting Domaine Charvin to organic viticulture, with the cessation of chemical weed killers.
The Domaine Charvin vineyard
Today, the Domaine Charvin vineyards cover 32 hectares in the Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du Rhône appellations. They are almost exclusively reserved for red wine, with less than one hectare dedicated to white wine.
The red grape varieties are Grenache noir (80%), Merlot (5%), Mourvèdre (5%), Syrah (5%) and Vaccarèse (5%). The white varieties are Bourboulenc (45%), Roussanne (20%), Clairette (20%) and Grenache blanc (15%).
The average age of the vines is 45 years and Domaine Charvin produces an average of 100,000 bottles per year. Domaine Charvin is now certified organic. The harvest is of course manual and the products used are made with natural components. The sorting is done from the harvest on plot.
The wines of Domaine Charvin
Red Côte du Rhône appellation
Domaine Charvin's Côte du Rhône Rouge is essentially composed of Grenache. Its robe displays an intense garnet color with cherry highlights. The nose is filled with red and black fruits, with spicy notes that give it more power. The mouth is powerful and round, always fresh. The wine can be drunk young, but can be kept just as well.
IGP Principality of Orange À Côté Charvin - Red
The IGP Principality of Orange À Côté Charvin red wine is made from a blend of equal parts Grenache and Merlot. It is a very fruity wine, with dominant red fruit aromas. Its color is dark.
We find these red fruits in the nose, as well as floral notes, raised by spicy nuances. The mouth is ample and generous. The fruit is very concentrated and its aromas remain intense during the long finish.
