The winemaker

The history of Domaine Bernard Gripa

Although it has been a family estate for several generations, the first bottle sales date back to 1974 for this domaine. Fabrice Gripa took over from his father Bernard Gripa, the estate's former manager, in 2001. Father and son share the same passion and respect for the vines: they work exclusively by hand and use compost. With the same respect for terroir and the environment, father and son produce fine red and white wines. The seventeen-hectare estate covers the Saint-Joseph and Saint-Péray appellations.

Terroir, grape varieties and vineyards of Domaine Bernard Gripa

The 17-hectare vineyard produces 80,000 bottles a year. The vines are on average forty years old. Syrah is the exclusive red grape variety, while the white grape varieties are Marsanne (70%) and Roussanne (30%). The grapes are harvested by hand.

The vines of Domaine Bernard Gripa are planted on the finest terroirs of the northern Rhône Valley. The unique minerality of these wines, as well as their precision and typicality, are explained by the granite and limestone soils. Granite and limestone soils produce wines with a unique minerality.

Wines from Bernard Gripa

Domaine Bernard Gripa white wines can be found in both appellations. In Saint-Péray, "Les Figuiers" comes from vines in the Putiers area. Its limestone soil gives it its acidity. Its floral, spicy notes and aromas of bergamot, lime and pomelo are the perfect accompaniment to poultry with cream sauce or red fruit desserts. "Les Pins" is a fruitier wine from limestone soils, best drunk young. Its notes of white fruits, flowers and spices are a fine accompaniment to cod, bass or duck. In Saint-Joseph, "Le Berceau" is a 100% Marsanne from the Tournon hillside, half of which is planted with original vines (1920). "Le Berceau" is the major cuvée of the Saint-Joseph appellation. It's a wine with a peppery, juicy mouthfeel and perfect balance. A fruity, mineral finish ideal with lobster.

"Saint-Joseph" reds are highly expressive wines with an incredible aromatic palette. Monocépage Syrah, planted on granite soil, "Le Berceau" red is exclusively hand-harvested. Its nose is composed of black fruits, licorice and violets. It's an ideal accompaniment to roasted red meats or bloomy cheeses. Whether red or white, Saint-Joseph or Saint-Péray, each of Domaine Bernard Gripa's wines is indisputable proof of the winemaker's skill and talent in achieving this beautiful balance.
