The winemaker
Château Mont-Redon is a winery located in the commune of Châteauneuf du Pape, in the Vaucluse department of the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region. The estate produces wines belonging to the Châteauneuf du Pape, Lirac and Côtes du Rhône appellations, as well as a marc blanc and an vieux marc.
The first vines planted on the Chateau Mont-Redon site date back to Roman times, over 2,000 years ago. The Romans chose the site for its location at the foot of a hill (later named Mont Redon, hence the château's name), which sheltered the vines from a violent mistral wind.
The winegrowing tradition was continually maintained on the estate. In 1344, Chateau Mont-Redon belonged to the episcopal domain. In the mid-18th century, it was acquired by a nobleman, Joseph Ignace d'Astier. He was a lawyer with a doctorate in law from Avignon, but his passion was vineyard work. The property then passed to his heirs, the Mathieu family.
While Anselme Mathieu - who called himself Marquis de Mont-Redon - held the reins of the estate in 1866, the phylloxera crisis swept through the region, wiping out the Châteauneuf du Pape vineyards.
In 1923, Chateau Mont-Redon was bought by Henri Plantin, who set about rebuilding the vineyard. He took advantage of the opportunity to regroup the 2.5 hectares that had been scattered around. He also decided to invest in the vast, stony, wooded plateau that dominated the estate and had remained undeveloped until then.
Henri Plantin's heirs continued his ancestor's work. Today, it's the fourth generation that benefits from the continuous enrichment of the vineyard, which now totals 186 hectares in Châteauneuf du Pape, including 100 hectares planted with vines. The owners have also broadened the diversity of their production, acquiring an estate in Côtes du Rhône in 1980, followed by an estate in Lirac in 1997.
The Chateau Mont-Redon vineyard is divided into three parts:
- 100 hectares of Châteauneuf du Pape (186 hectares of land);
- 25 hectares in total of Côtes de Rhône, including 22 hectares dedicated to vines;
- 33 hectares in Lirac, 32 of which are planted with vines.
Chateau Mont-Redon's grape varieties are Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Counoise, Syrah, Muscardin, Vaccarèse, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Clairette, Viognier, Picpoul, Bourboulenc and Roussanne.
The typically Mediterranean climate offers recurrent summer drought, with unpredictable and irregular rainfall from one year to the next. Rain is most absent in July, while October generally promises to be the wettest month.
On the other hand, there's always plenty of sunshine. The grapes benefit permanently from the heat, as it accumulates during the day in the pebbles, which release it during the night, favoring early ripening.
The powerful Mistral wind purifies the vines and prevents many diseases, while avoiding the need for phytosanitary treatments.
Chateau Mont-Redon offers wines from the following appellations:
- Châteauneuf du Pape in red and white ;
- Lirac in three dresses;
- Côtes du Rhône in all three colors.
