The winemaker
Château le Plaisir is a wine estate steeped in history. A witness to the great history of winegrowing in Cairanne, it is one of the oldest properties in the appellation. The oldest documents found attest to the acquisition of "La Grange Le Plaisir" in 1712 by Thomas Gasparin, grandson of Adriano Gasparini who was appointed Consul in Cayranne in 1595 by the legates of Pope Clement VIII.
In addition to this historical dimension, this property is an exception, as it is one of the rare wine estates in the Rhône Valley authorised to bear the "Château" appellation. Château le Plaisir has been run by several families, each of whom has contributed to the reputation of the estate's wines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the Raoul Berthet-Rayne family that really put the wine production on the map. Gérard Pierrefeu, who was for more than 30 years President of the Syndicat des Côtes du Rhône, President of the INAO and Mayor of Cairanne, took over with his family. His son Johannes Pierrefeu took over the management of the estate and his wife Charlotte Pierrefeu worked to develop the Château by running a guesthouse and hotel and organising banquets and weddings.
In 2009, Patrick Julien's family, an old family of winegrowers from Cairanne, acquired the Château. The estate now covers 17 hectares and will be expanded by 30 hectares to represent a surface of 44 hectares. The original vineyard is located at the entrance to the commune of Cairanne. The expansion of the vineyard now allows the Julien family to produce wines in several appellations: Cairanne, Plan de Dieu, Côtes du Rhône villages and IGP Méditerranée. In addition to their wine-making activities, the Julien family, who are passionate about truffle growing, have integrated a truffle farm into the Château.
