The History of Chateau la Verrerie

The wine estate of Château la Verrerie was founded in 1981, by Jean-Louis Descours - grandfather of the current manager - who fell in love with this land nestled in a green setting. The winegrower then settled on about twenty hectares of vines, scattered among olive trees, cades (juniper) and yews (holm oaks).

With the help of his son Gérard, Jean-Louis Descours built a winery, before doubling the surface of the vineyard. The domain, until then dedicated to red wine, was also enriched with white grape varieties. The first vintages were marketed in 1985. In 1988, Château la Verrerie received the AOC Côtes du Luberon.

1989 was the year of the creation of the elite cuvée "Grand Deffand", featuring Syrah and which received the gold medal at the first edition of the competition of the best Syrahs in the world.

Today, Château la Verrerie is managed by the creator's grandson, Christopher Descours.

The Château la Verrerie vineyard

The Château la Verrerie estate covers 150 hectares, stretching from the extreme south of the Rhone Valley to the northern tip of Provence. 56 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of vines, including 45 hectares for red wine. The clay-limestone soil is made up of the stony scree of the Luberon massif. The vines are beaten by the Mistral wind - and thus free of humidity and parasites - and benefit from the southern exposure on the slopes. The average age of the vines is 30 years.

The grape varieties for the red wines are 53% Grenache Noir Provençal, 36% Syrah, 8% Cinsault and 3% Carignan. The grape variety for red wines is composed of 38% Viognier, 30% Bourboulenc, 12% Clairette, 11% Roussanne and 9% Grenache Blanc.

Château la Verrerie has converted to the principles of organic farming which benefits the vines, as well as the entire region so famous thanks to the Luberon Regional Natural Park. Chemicals are banned and natural amendments and plant-based treatments are favored. The meticulous pruning allows to limit the number of clusters and to optimize the quality of the grapes, thanks to a better aeration.

Harvesting is manual and sometimes done at night for better preservation of the grapes.
