The history of the estate
The history of Château Fontvert has its roots in the 17th century, when the estate was created by a Huguenot family in the village of Lourmarin in the Luberon. Remaining in the hands of the same family for more than three centuries, the estate was bought by Doctor Olivier Monod, mayor of the village, in the middle of the 20th century.
Starting in 1999, Jérôme Monod and his three sons, all driven by the same passion, decided to vinify and mature wines produced on this rich and sunny terroir themselves.
Today, the estate covers nearly twenty hectares of vines, divided between Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Vermentino and Grenache Blanc.
The terroir
Located in the heart of the Luberon, the vineyard enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and dry winters. The soils of this terroir are a mixture of secondary limestone and marine sedimentary rocks (molasses, sands, safres...).
In sum, the estate benefits from two distinct soil types: calcareous molasses soils and marly sandy soils. The former are favorable to the concentration of grapes for the production of red wines while the latter are favorable to the aromatic finesse (white and rosé wines).
Eager to produce wines that express as fully as possible the complexity of the terroirs on which they evolve, Château de Fontvert is now certified in Organic Agriculture and Biodynamics.
The wines
Le Roucas is a rather full-bodied red wine with a beautiful structure in the mouth. Fleshy and with notes of black fruits, it offers melted tannins and a certain suavity. This wine is a good table wine, which will make a nice duo with red meat.
