Famille Sumeire
(5 customer reviews)

The imposing Sumeire family makes its way in Provence

The Sumeire family story begins in the late 19th century, when they were wine merchants in Marseille. Their flourishing business then spread throughout the region. In 1937, Château Coussin became part of the family estate when Elie Sumeire married the estate's heiress. The family epic continued with the purchase of Château l'Afrique in 1953 and Château Maupagne in 1991. Today, Jean-Pierre, Gabriel, Olivier and Sophie are at the head of the family business. They are recognized players in Côtes de Provence wine production. They are committed to carrying on the work of their ancestors, respecting the land and maintaining the consistent quality of their production.

The Sumeire family operates a "culture raisonnée" on all its land

The Sumeire family's 200 hectares are spread across their three châteaux around their base in Trets, Provence.
The clay-limestone soil and Mediterranean climate are ideal for growing wine. This has always enabled the Sumeires to use sensible growing methods. They respect the environment by harvesting by hand. What's more, phytosanitary products are reserved for occasional use in the event of disease.

The Sumeire family produces finely crafted wines

The wines are divided into eight cuvées. As befits the region, the main production is of course rosé. Grenache, Cinsault and Tibouren give pale, light wines in tune with the times. The red wines, supple and colorful, are a blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are deliberately marketed in older vintages to give the aromas time to develop. The Sumeire family also produces rolle-based whites. Find out more

The winemaker
The Sumeire family has been established in Trets since 1238. Their 200-hectare vineyard, with its many grape varieties (grenache, syrah, cinsault, cabernet sauvignon, rolle), flourishes on clay-limestone soil combining pebbles and alluvium. The Sumeire family uses alternative growing methods to make the most of the Mediterranean climate. No fewer than 8 cuvées are available in red, white or rosé, to accompany any dish.
